ABOUT

Previously named Eastern Hills Painting, Premium Painting was established in 1985 owned and operated by Steve Pranklin. Over the years the business has remained a small specialised team of trades people experienced in all aspects of house painting.

Steve Pranklin founded the company 25 years ago. Originally from London, Steve began painting as a young man learning his trade from his father. Emigrating to Australia in 1970 Steve carried on his painting career in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. He spent a bit of time on the oil rigs as a crane operator until he settled down in Perth in 1983 and started a family, which motivated him to start the company.

APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR
Painting apprenticeship proves a master stroke

A growing number of WA women are brushing up on their skills with apprenticeships that give them the chance to add a feminine touch to the male dominated painting industry.

After completing her Certificate II in painting and decorating with MPA skills, Donna Paull began an apprenticeship through the training group's apprentice employment program.

Now in the second year of her apprenticeship, Miss Paull works with host employer Steve Pranklin on various projects, including chapel at Guildford Grammar.

Miss Paull has excelled in her apprenticeship and was the best first year apprentice at last year's Master Painters Association of WA Apprenticeship of the Year Awards, coming third.

The 22 year old, who was also MPA Skills first year apprentice of the year, also recently won a gold medal in the WorldSkills WA awards and is vying to win WorldSkills Australia.

Training Minister Peter Collier said women such as Miss Paull, with the support of State training programs, had driven the increase in registered female painters in WA from 25 in 2010 to 47 this year.

"The Liberal-National Government has focused significantly on providing opportunities for all West Australians to pursue a training direction that reflects their interests so they can carve out long-term careers that they ulitmately find rewarding," Mr. Collier said.

MPA Skill will be one of more that 100 exhibitors at this year's Skills West Expo at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from August 10-12.
